About the role#
The Department of Writing is seeking students to join the Writing Center team for the Fall 2027 term. This paid position involves supporting students from across the college, including international and graduate students, to help them build independence as writers. Tutors work approximately 10 hours per week and have the potential to move into leadership roles, such as Admin Tutor, where they may manage other staff.
What you'll do#
- Provide one-on-one tutoring sessions to help students develop their writing skills.
- Maintain the Writing Center as an inclusive and welcoming environment.
- Host workshops and class visits to promote Writing Center resources.
- Develop instructional content and manage projects independently or in groups.
- Support Writing Center pedagogical practices and collaborate with the Writing Center Director on strategic tasks.
- Serve as a peer coach for new student employees and assist with daily operations.
What you'll need#
- Sophomore to senior standing (current seniors and graduates are not eligible).
- Solid academic standing and strong writing abilities, particularly in expository genres.
- Successful completion of one of the following: Academic Writing I; Argument; Inquiry, Research, and Writing Across the Disciplines; Introduction to the Essay; or Ithaca Seminar in Writing.
- Completion of at least one additional writing course beyond the 100-level.
- Excellent communication skills, including experience with public speaking and presenting to groups.
- A friendly, patient, and approachable demeanor suitable for one-on-one conferences.
- Strong listening skills, maturity, and a sense of responsibility.
- Interest or experience in areas such as web design, instructional material development, public relations, or graphic design is highly desirable.

- This position is located in Ithaca, New York.
- The role is on-site and part-time.
- Applicants must be available to register for WRTG 21800: Writing Center Pedagogy during the Fall semester, as this course is a requirement for the position.
