The Department of Writing at Ithaca College is seeking students to serve as Writing Center Tutors. This position is designed to help students across the college gain independence as writers while maintaining the Writing Center as a welcoming and inclusive environment. Tutors work approximately 10 hours per week, with opportunities to take on leadership roles such as Admin Tutor, where students may manage other tutors. This is a paid position for the Fall 2027 term.
What you'll do#
- Provide one-on-one tutoring to a diverse range of students, including international and graduate students.
- Host workshops and class visits to promote Writing Center services.
- Develop instructional content and contribute to the center's pedagogical practices.
- Manage projects and appointments independently or in collaborative groups.
- Support the Writing Center Director with day-to-day operations and long-term strategic projects.
- Act as a peer coach for new student employees to answer questions and promote a positive workplace.
What you'll need#
- Sophomore to senior standing (current seniors or graduates are not eligible).
- Solid academic standing and strong writing abilities, particularly in expository genres.
- Successful completion of one of the following: Academic Writing I; Argument; Inquiry, Research, and Writing Across the Disciplines; Introduction to the Essay; or Ithaca Seminar in Writing.
- Completion of at least one additional writing course beyond the 100-level (Argument is preferred).
- Excellent communication skills, including experience with public speaking and presenting to groups.
- Personal qualities suited for one-on-one conferences, including patience, approachability, and strong listening skills.
- Interest or experience in areas such as copy writing, instructional material development, web design, online content development, public relations, or graphic design is highly desirable.
- Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
Location & details#
- Location: Ithaca, New York.
- Modality: On-site.
- Note: If hired, you are required to take the 1-credit course WRTG 21800: Writing Center Pedagogy during the Fall semester. Successful completion of this course is a prerequisite for beginning tutoring duties.
