About the role#
This position offers an experiential learning opportunity for students to support the Community Science Institute in its mission to safeguard water resources. The role involves a mix of administrative support, data management, and public engagement within a certified water testing laboratory environment.
What you'll do#
- Coordinate programs and events, including Biomonitoring, Harmful Algal Bloom, Synoptic Sampling, and the Journey of Water series.
- Develop and publish educational content through social media, handouts, fact sheets, and articles.
- Provide customer service by discussing water testing needs, educating clients on water quality, and managing sample intake.
- Enter monitoring data into the public water quality database.
- Prepare certified water test reports for drinking water clients.
- Wash and prepare sample bottles for volunteer monitoring programs.
- Pursue an independent project that supports the organization's mission, subject to approval.
What you'll need#
- Completion of at least two semesters of coursework in chemistry, environmental science, biology, or a related discipline.
- Experience with science communication or science education.
- Previous customer service experience.
- Proficiency with Microsoft 365.
- Ability to work independently, take initiative, solve problems, and maintain attention to detail.
Location & details#
- Location: Ithaca, New York.
- Modality: On-site.
- Compensation: $17 per hour.
- Eligibility: This position is available only to students awarded Federal Work-Study.
- Working conditions include a traditional office environment with occasional field work and the requirement to sit for extended periods.
