Tax Intern, State and Local Tax - Summer 2027

About the role#

The State and Local Tax (SALT) Intern will perform research and analysis of tax issues while working alongside experienced tax professionals. This role provides hands-on experience in firm practices and the opportunity to build professional relationships within the accounting field. Interns will receive direction and coaching on a variety of state and local tax laws and resources.

What you'll do#

• Complete basic research on federal and state tax issues.
• Prepare tax and unclaimed property exposure analysis models.
• Draft tax memoranda and other tax-related documents.
• Assist in drafting responses to notices from state taxing authorities.
• Utilize Caseware, Go Systems, and other tax-related software to complete basic tax returns under supervision.
• Participate in the preparation, filing, and completion of voluntary disclosure agreements for sales and use tax, income tax, and unclaimed property.
• Ensure compliance with all applicable authorities and firm policies, including the BDO Tax Quality Manual.
• Monitor current tax law changes and manage the collection and retention of client workpapers.
• Partner with experienced SALT professionals to learn state tax planning and assist in preparing presentations for client meetings.

What you'll need#

• Enrollment in a Bachelor's or Master's program in Accounting, Taxation, Finance, or a related field, or a J.D. or LLM program.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Ability to multi-task and work effectively both independently and within a team.
• Leadership experience, prior accounting or public accounting internships, and participation in college-level accounting or finance organizations are preferred.
