BDO Internships: USA and Canada Guide

BDO internships on Intern Insider are posted by two separate firms, BDO USA and BDO Canada. When this guide was written, the BDO USA page listed 72 open internships, and 5 of them opened this week. The BDO Canada page listed 9 open internships and co-ops, and 1 of them opened this week. All 81 are student listings. Cities, terms, and eligibility below are as listed on Intern Insider at the time of writing, except where a sentence names a page on bdo.com. The posting you apply through is the final word on its own terms.

What BDO internships look like#

The BDO USA company page says the firm provides audit, tax, and advisory services, operates as a partnership, and is the U.S. member of the BDO International network. Headquarters are Chicago. The about text says over 11,000 employees. The card lists 10,001 or more, an employee count of 11,258, and accounting as the industry. BDO's careers page says the BDO name covers the network and each member firm, and that BDO USA, P.C., a Virginia professional corporation, is the U.S. member of BDO International Limited.

BDO Canada is a different firm. The about text says it was founded in 1921, provides assurance, tax, and consulting, is based in Toronto, has 100 offices, and employs over 4,800 people. The card lists 1,001 to 5,000 employees, the same founding year, Toronto headquarters, and financial services as the industry. No BDO Canada student page could be read for this guide. Canada facts below come from the nine listings and that card.

On the BDO USA listings, CPA means Certified Public Accountant. The one Canadian listing that uses the term describes the Chartered Professional Accountant designation.

Of the 72 BDO USA listings, 38 are assurance: 30 core assurance, 3 risk advisory, 1 information technology risk advisory, 2 technology risk assurance, and 2 third party attestation. Twenty-five are core tax, 2 are state and local tax, 2 are international tax, and 2 are transfer pricing. One is advisory work in risk and claims recovery. Two are summer analyst internships in investment banking at BDO Capital Advisors. None of the 72 is a marketing title.

Of the 9 BDO Canada listings, 3 are assurance co-ops, 3 are financial reporting and insights, 1 is office administration, 1 is human resources, and 1 is the Indigenous Student Program.

How the two programs differ#

The BDO USA internship page names accounting, assurance, tax, advisory, marketing, finance, and core business services, with mentorship. It says the firm can help balance exam study and work, and that a bonus may follow the CPA exam or another professional exam. It calls roles predominantly on-site. Listings that state a mode say on-site at BDO USA and hybrid at BDO Canada.

Pathway to Success, on that page and on its own page, is for students still choosing a major: virtual sessions, an office visit, and one-to-one mentorship. A later answer says it helps freshmen and sophomores. It is not one of the 81 listings.

Of the 72 BDO USA listings, 23 are Summer 2027, 19 are Summer 2028, 6 are Winter 2027, 22 are Winter 2028, and the Houston state and local tax listing is Rolling. The New York information technology risk listing does not state a term.

Assurance, tax, and advisory roles#

Thirty core assurance listings ask for a bachelor's or master's in accounting and for credits toward the CPA. The work is Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, Generally Accepted Auditing Standards, audit support, and one research project. A master's and prior leadership are preferred. Winter 2027 offices are Detroit, Madison, and Minneapolis: open Detroit. Winter 2028 listings that state a rate are Columbus and Cleveland. Miami is Summer 2028, as are listings in Tampa, Jacksonville, Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, and West Palm Beach. West Palm Beach and Cleveland each also have a Winter 2027 core tax listing, so read the term line. Norfolk and Richmond are Summer 2027. Nine Summer 2027 listings in those two cities, six assurance and three core tax, show no recommended apply-by window, including Norfolk core tax.

All 25 core tax listings ask for accounting or a related field and for CPA credits in progress. The work is returns, extensions, estimates, year-end projections, Internal Revenue Service notices, and the income tax provision. Baltimore is Winter 2027. Los Angeles core tax is Summer 2027. International tax, Los Angeles is Summer 2027 cross-border work and accepts accounting, taxation, or a Master of Laws program. A Juris Doctor (J.D.), leadership, or CPA progress are preferred. Dallas international tax is Summer 2028 and does not mention the CPA. Transfer pricing, Los Angeles is Summer 2027 for accounting, economics, business administration, or finance. Dallas transfer pricing is also Summer 2027 and states no hourly figure. State and local tax, Houston is the Rolling listing. It asks for a bachelor's, master's, J.D., or Master of Laws (LLM) program, plus basic accounting and tax theory. Dallas state and local tax is Summer 2028.

Risk advisory, Dallas is Summer 2027 and asks for a bachelor's in accounting or finance. An MBA, leadership, and CPA credits are preferred. Miami and Boston use the same title and term. Technology risk, Atlanta is Summer 2027 for accounting, computer science, or information systems, including Sarbanes-Oxley work. Dallas has the same title for Summer 2027. Information technology risk, New York states no term. Travel may be up to 10 percent of the time. Third party attestation, Dallas is Summer 2027 and covers System and Organization Controls (SOC) 1, SOC 2, and SOC 3, plus HITRUST and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The Atlanta listing also requires a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent.

Claims recovery is Summer 2027 in Chicago, Dallas, or Grand Rapids, on damages, lost profits, and fraud analysis. Majors listed are accounting, business administration, economics, and risk management. CPA credits are preferred, and a high school diploma or equivalent is required. Both Richmond investment banking listings prefer finance or accounting and completion of junior year. Summer analyst, Summer 2027 and Summer analyst, BDO Capital Advisors, Summer 2028 both describe sell-side advisory, buy-side work, and private placements.

Co-ops at BDO Canada#

Assurance, Brandon is Winter 2027, January to April, full-time, paid, and hybrid across the office, client sites, and virtual work. You need an accounting degree or diploma in progress. A second Brandon listing runs May to August 2027 and does not say Summer 2027. Portage la Prairie does: Summer 2027, May to August, four months, hybrid, and paid.

Financial reporting and insights covers reviews, compilations, and corporate tax. All three are full-time, paid, and hybrid, in Winnipeg, Pembina Valley, Portage la Prairie, or Brandon.

• January to April 2027 is the Winter 2027 listing.

• May to August 2027 says the firm supports students pursuing their CPA designation with mentorship, exam fee reimbursement, and study leave. The other two do not say that.

• Fall 2027 runs September through December.

Administration is four months from January 2027 in London, Windsor, Sarnia, Chatham, Strathroy, or Woodstock, with on-site and hybrid work and expected pay of $35,100 per annum. It asks for an administration degree or diploma.

Human resources is an eight-month Winter 2027 co-op in Toronto, Calgary, Halifax, or Vancouver, at $40,000 to $62,000 annually. It asks for a human resources degree or diploma. English and French bilingualism is a strong asset. The work includes offer letters, orientation, and campus recruiting.

The Indigenous Student Program is a full-time, paid, hybrid summer 2027 program for self-identifying Indigenous post-secondary students, including First Nations, Inuit, and Métis, who are working toward a diploma or degree. The listing names service lines such as assurance, BDO Digital, business services and outsourcing, financial advisory, firm wide services, management consulting, and personal debt solutions, with mentorship from Indigenous leaders at BDO. Cities listed are Toronto, Edmonton, Calgary, Kitchener-Waterloo, Halifax, Montreal, St. John's, Vancouver, Saskatoon, Ottawa, Winnipeg, and London.

Who can apply, and what the listings pay#

Every one of the 81 listings asks you to be in school. None is a manager or senior title, and none requires a completed degree as the only path. Twelve BDO USA listings never mention the CPA. The summer analyst roles are the only open listings that name a class year. If a listing is silent, do not guess.

The internship page says BDO offers paid internships only. That line is on the BDO USA site. All 9 Canada listings say paid. Sixty-one of 72 BDO USA listings do. Eleven do not, and they state no figure. Eight state a number: Columbus and Cleveland assurance at $33.00 to $37.00 per hour, three Los Angeles tax listings at $40.00 to $45.00 per hour, the Richmond Summer 2027 analyst at $28.00 to $32.00 per hour, administration at $35,100 per annum, and human resources at $40,000 to $62,000 annually. Cleveland and Los Angeles say the range is for that location.

When and how to apply#

None of the 81 listings states an employer deadline in the posting text. A recommended apply-by window on Intern Insider is not an employer deadline. Nine Summer 2027 listings in Norfolk and Richmond show no window. Three listings show a window that falls on the day this guide was written, so this guide does not print it. The other windows fall later in November or in December.

The internship page says every opening is on the BDO USA campus career site, including schools where BDO does not recruit. Choose a business line before interviews. If you have interviewed and have not heard back, the page says every interviewed candidate gets a response and that you should start with the campus recruiter.
