About the role#
As a State and Local Tax (SALT) Intern, you will perform research and analysis on tax issues while gaining hands-on experience in tax filings. You will work alongside experienced tax professionals who provide direction and coaching. This role offers a perspective on firm practices and helps you build professional relationships.
What you'll do#
- Apply tax standards to deliver quality services.
- Ensure client compliance with authorities and firm policies.
- Prepare and file voluntary disclosure agreements for sales and use tax, income tax, and unclaimed property.
- Draft tax memoranda and responses to notices from state taxing authorities.
- Prepare models for tax and unclaimed property exposure analysis.
- Participate in the audit defense of client returns and positions.
- Monitor tax law changes and apply them to return preparation.
- Manage the collection and retention of client workpapers.
- Conduct basic research on federal and state tax issues.
- Partner with SALT professionals to learn state tax planning.
- Assist in preparing tax presentations for client meetings.
- Use tax software such as Caseware and Go Systems.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in a Bachelors, Masters, J.D., or LLM program in Accounting, Taxation, Finance, or a related field.
- Basic knowledge of accounting and tax theory.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, specifically Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to research tax topics and compose written analysis.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Capability to multi-task while working independently or in a team.
- Willingness to learn and follow instructions.
- Prior accounting internship or work experience is preferred.
- Leadership experience and participation in college accounting or finance organizations are preferred.
