About the role#
The Department of Toxic Substances Control is hiring three student assistants to support the Hazardous Waste Management Plan Unit. You will help implement recommendations from the 2026 Hazardous Waste Management Plan and address data gaps identified in the 2023 Hazardous Waste Management Report. This role involves researching and collecting data about communities near hazardous waste generators and destination facilities using tools like ArcGIS, zoning maps, and land use categories.
What you'll do#
- Use facility identification and location information to obtain destination facility details.
- Incorporate hazardous waste generator information into geographic analysis to address public comments and report recommendations.
- Conduct geographic analysis of hazardous waste generators and destination facilities to understand potential impacts.
- Identify and evaluate recurring hazardous waste streams to focus on consistent generation patterns.
- Select and analyze specific generators to provide targeted insights.
- Recommend additional industries or waste streams to include in the analysis.
- Identify extra resources that could support the project.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as a college student during the regular term.
- Undergraduate students must be enrolled in at least six-semester units or nine quarter units. Graduate students must be enrolled in at least four-semester units or six quarter units.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), calendar management tools, and data entry systems.
- Experience responding to inquiries via phone and email in a professional setting.
- Experience performing administrative or program support tasks, such as tracking or maintaining records.
- Experience reviewing information, identifying issues, and applying established procedures.
- Experience working with databases, spreadsheets, or tracking systems.
- Ability to work with internal teams and external stakeholders.
Location & details#
- This position is located in Sacramento, California.
- Work is performed on-site at 1001 I Street.
- This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited position.
- Students generally work up to 20 hours per week during the academic year, with the potential for up to 40 hours during academic breaks.
- Work hours are Monday through Friday, between 8 AM and 5 PM.
