About the role#
As a Small Business Lending Support Intern, you will assist lending teams in serving small business owners across the country. You will help move transactions forward by supporting lenders, underwriters, and credit partners with documentation, research, and analysis. This role offers hands-on exposure to small business lending, credit analysis, and portfolio management. You will work on-site at our headquarters in Wilmington, North Carolina, starting in January 2027.
What you'll do#
- Build and maintain loan files in our loan origination system to ensure complete information for lending decisions.
- Upload, review, and organize loan documentation from internal platforms.
- Perform file completeness reviews and identify missing financial or supporting documents.
- Create and maintain checklists to track outstanding items and keep transactions moving.
- Assist with financial spreading, debt schedules, cash flow analysis, and sources and uses preparation.
- Conduct industry, company, and market research on prospective and existing borrowers.
- Partner with lenders and credit teams to complete preparatory work.
- Support portfolio management, reporting, and administrative activities.
- Assist with presentations, special projects, and process improvement initiatives.
- Maintain awareness of regulatory requirements, including BSA, AML, CIP, and OFAC.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, Economics, Banking, or a related field.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Comfort working with documents, spreadsheets, and technology platforms.
- Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively as part of a team.
- Interest in banking, lending, financial services, or small business growth.
- Coursework in finance, accounting, economics, or business analysis is preferred.
- Experience using Microsoft Excel to organize or track information.
- Familiarity with financial statements like balance sheets and income statements.
- Previous experience through internships, leadership, customer service, or student organizations.

- Location: Wilmington, North Carolina (On-site).
- Term: Winter 2027 (Spring semester).
- Status: Part-time, paid internship.
- This position averages 10 hours per week with the potential to extend into Summer 2027.
