About the role#
The Insurance Authorization Intern supports the daily operations of the Hampton University Proton Cancer Institute. You will work directly with insurance authorizations, patient referrals, and internal tracking systems to ensure the clinic functions smoothly. This role requires attention to detail and clear communication with clinical and administrative teams.
What you'll do#
- Monitor incoming insurance authorizations and referrals.
- Log authorization numbers, expiration dates, and service coverage details.
- Communicate with insurance companies to verify patient coverage and benefits.
- Follow up on pending authorizations to prevent processing delays.
- Update the office Smart Board and dashboard systems daily with current insurance statuses.
- Input new patient authorizations and outstanding items into internal databases.
- Coordinate with team members to flag urgent cases or missing documentation.
- Document verification results in the electronic health record system.
- Maintain digital and paper records in compliance with HIPAA regulations.
- Generate basic reports on authorization trends and insurance denials.
- Assist with clerical tasks including scanning, faxing, filing, and emailing.
- Participate in team meetings and identify ways to improve tracking procedures.
- Complete a final presentation at the end of the internship summarizing your projects and professional development.
