About the role#
This paid externship offers senior nursing students at least 48 hours of clinical experience during the winter break. You will work in the Emergency Department or Med/Surg units at Gettysburg Hospital, paired 1:1 with an experienced RN preceptor. This position requires full-time or part-time availability with shifts that vary based on your preceptor's schedule.
What you'll do#
- Provide direct patient care, including assistance with bathing, dressing, eating, and positioning.
- Monitor patient conditions and report changes to the appropriate medical staff.
- Obtain and document vital signs such as blood pressure, temperature, pulse, and respiration.
- Assist in preparing and transporting patients for tests and procedures.
- Perform selected clinical procedures, such as wound care, catheterization, and tube feedings, upon demonstrating required competency.
- Conduct EKGs and point-of-care testing, including blood glucose monitoring.
- Maintain par levels of supplies and equipment on assigned units and ensure patient areas are properly stocked.
What you'll need#
- A High School Diploma or GED.
- Current enrollment in an approved nursing program with at least two completed clinical semesters.
- Completion of a formal Nurse Extern Program upon hire.
- Basic Life Support certification upon hire.
- Enrollment in an accredited BSN program is preferred.
