About the role#
The Nurse Extern program at Chambersburg Hospital offers a 4 to 6-week paid clinical experience during the winter of 2027. You will work alongside an experienced RN preceptor on a 1:1 basis to gain hands-on clinical exposure. Available units include the Emergency Department, Critical Care, Intermediate Care, Medical and Surgical units, and Acute Rehab. Shifts rotate based on your preceptor's schedule.
What you'll do#
- Provide general nursing care and personal assistance, including bathing, dressing, and positioning patients.
- Monitor patient conditions and report changes to the appropriate staff.
- Obtain and document vital signs like temperature, blood pressure, weight, and respiration.
- Perform selected procedures according to the Nurse Extern checklist.
- Assist with EKGs and point-of-care testing, such as blood glucose monitoring.
- Prepare and transport patients for tests and procedures.
- Maintain supply levels in patient rooms and nursing areas.
- Adhere to established policies regarding safety, infection control, and quality assessment.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an approved nursing program with at least two clinical semesters completed.
- Completion of at least one medical-surgical clinical rotation.
- Must be passing in your accredited program.
- Basic Life Support certification upon hire.
- Applicants must submit a resume, transcript, and a letter of recommendation from a current nursing instructor.
