About the role#
This paid Nurse Externship offers nursing students a hands-on clinical experience at Gettysburg Hospital. You will work alongside a 1:1 experienced RN preceptor to gain practical skills across various hospital units. The program runs from May 17, 2027, to July 10, 2027, and consists of two 4-week unit experiences. Participants are expected to work a minimum of 36 hours per week on rotating shifts.
What you'll do#
- Provide direct patient care and assist with personal care tasks like bathing, positioning, and feeding.
- Collect and document patient data, including vital signs.
- Assist the registered nurse with care coordination and discharge planning.
- Perform clinical procedures such as catheterization, wound care, tube feedings, and ostomy care following competency verification.
- Conduct EKGs and Point-of-Care testing.
- Prepare and transport patients for tests and procedures.
- Manage unit supplies by stocking rooms and maintaining par levels.
- Participate in educational programs and staff meetings.
- Monitor patient conditions and report changes to the nursing team.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an approved nursing program with at least two completed clinical semesters.
- Completion of a Medical Surgical rotation prior to the start date.
- Good standing status within your nursing program.
- Basic Life Support certification upon hire.
- Completion of a formal Nurse Extern Program upon hire.
- Preference is given to students enrolled in an accredited BSN program or those entering their final semester or year of study.

- Rotations available: Surgical Unit, Medical Unit, Emergency Department, Maternity, Critical Care Units, Operating Room, and Nursing Resource Team.
