About the role#
The Nurse Extern program at WellSpan York Hospital offers a paid clinical experience for nursing students. You will work alongside an experienced RN preceptor in a one-on-one setting to gain hands-on experience. The program runs from May 17, 2027, to July 10, 2027, and includes two four-week unit rotations. Areas of rotation include surgical and medical units, the Emergency Department, maternity, labor and delivery, pediatrics, NICU, critical care units, the operating room, and the nursing resource team.
What you'll do#
- Provide general nursing and personal care assistance, including bathing, dressing, feeding, and positioning patients.
- Assist with patient preparation and transportation for tests and procedures.
- Obtain and document vital signs and monitor patient conditions, reporting any changes to the care team.
- Perform selected procedures, EKGs, and point-of-care testing.
- Support registered nurses with care coordination and discharge planning.
- Maintain supply levels, set up equipment, and respond to light calls.
- Assess and interpret age-specific patient data to provide appropriate care.
- Follow established safety, quality, and infection control standards.
What you'll need#
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Current enrollment in an approved nursing program with at least two clinical semesters completed.
- Completion of at least one medical-surgical clinical rotation.
- Must maintain good standing in your nursing program and have a passing grade.
- Basic Life Support certification by the start date.
- Enrollment in an accredited BSN program is preferred.
- Application materials must include an uploaded resume, transcript, and a letter of recommendation from a current nursing instructor.
Location & details#
- Location: York, Pennsylvania.
- Term: Summer 2027.
- Commitment: Minimum of 36 hours per week.
- Schedule: Rotating shifts, including days, evenings, nights, and weekends, based on preceptor availability.
