About the role#
The Student Nurse Extern I program offers nursing students practical work experience to help with the transition into a registered nurse role. This paid position provides hands-on learning across various units, including acute care, critical care, emergency care, psychiatry, and surgical areas. You will work on a variable schedule to gain experience in teamwork, communication, and professional development.
What you'll do#
- Perform direct patient care under the supervision and direction of a registered nurse.
- Assist patients with activities of daily living, such as personal hygiene, nutrition, ambulation, and elimination.
- Monitor, record, and communicate patient conditions to the supervising RN.
- Document care given and collaborate with the broader patient care team.
- Provide education to patients and families based on their learning needs.
- Act as an advocate for the physical and emotional well-being of patients.
- Support performance improvement initiatives and maintain professional relationships with families and staff.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment as a 3rd year student or higher in a School of Professional Nursing.
- A high school diploma or equivalent.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.

- Location: Danville, Virginia.
- Employment type: Part-time, PRN.
- Compensation: $17.16 to $20.38 per hour.
