About the role#
The Nurse Extern in the PCU works under the direct supervision of an RN or Clinical Manager. You will assist the multidisciplinary team to provide patient care and support the daily operations of the department. This role focuses on direct patient interaction and maintaining a safe environment for those in our care.
What you'll do#
- Provide nursing care and assist with activities of daily living including hygiene, mobility, and feeding.
- Measure and record vital signs, intake and output, and oxygenation levels using pulse oximetry.
- Obtain patient weights using various scales.
- Report patient pain and changes in condition to an RN.
- Assist with bathing, oral care, and shampooing.
- Monitor skin integrity and ensure patients are repositioned regularly.
- Manage medical equipment including anti-embolism stockings, sequential-compression devices, and Buck's traction.
- Implement fall prevention protocols and follow the SKIN bundle care standards.
What you'll need#
- High School Diploma or G.E.D.
- Current enrollment in an accredited registered nursing program with at least one completed clinical rotation.
- Active CPR certification.
- Ability to work variable shifts, including holidays and weekends.
- Physical ability to perform lifting and transferring using proper body mechanics.
- Basic computer skills.
- Prior hospital or health care experience and knowledge of the hospital environment are preferred.
