About the role#
The Patient Care Extern position offers nursing students a chance to practice delivering care in various hospital units. You will work under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse to assist with daily nursing activities and patient care plans. This is a paid, part-time, temporary role.
What you'll do#
- Observe and assist with direct and indirect patient care.
- Watch Registered Nurses perform tasks like patient education, medication administration, and invasive procedures.
- Help patients with daily living activities, personal care, and emotional support.
- Perform treatments and services as prescribed by a physician or indicated by the patient condition.
- Monitor patient status and report changes to the care team.
- Collect specimens for diagnostic testing and prepare patients for surgery or other procedures.
- Assist with patient transfers and discharges.
- Maintain patient records and data.
- Communicate patient and family needs to the appropriate provider.
- Answer telephone calls and call lights.
- Maintain unit supplies, inventory, and equipment to ensure everything is in working order.
- Follow safety rules to maintain a secure environment.
What you'll need#
- High School diploma or GED.
- Current enrollment in an accredited nursing school with completion of basic medical/surgical nursing coursework.
- Graduation date within the next 12 months.
- Minimum GPA of 2.5.
