About the role#
Stantec is seeking a Coastal Engineering Intern for the Winter 2027 term. This full-time position supports our Environmental Services sector by delivering coastal projects within a multi-disciplinary team. You will assist in developing practical engineering designs and construction solutions for various coastal environments and ecosystem restoration projects.
What you'll do#
- Follow health and safety guidelines to protect employees, clients, and the public.
- Apply principles of coastal engineering, hydrodynamics, wave theory, and sediment transport mechanics.
- Complete complex engineering calculations and numerical modeling.
- Plan, schedule, and coordinate detailed phases of coastal engineering work.
- Perform coastal engineering analyses and prepare design drawings, technical reports, and documentation.
- Assist with obtaining State and Federal permits and ensure project compliance.
- Prepare construction plans and specifications.
- Conduct construction observation, interpret contract documents, and review submittals.
- Collaborate with clients, peers, management, and vendors.
- Assist with proposal efforts and the preparation of labor and material estimates.
- Stay current on regulatory policy and rule changes.
What you'll need#
- Master of Science degree or higher in Coastal, Civil, or Environmental Engineering, Oceanography, or a related field.
- 0-5 years of experience in coastal, port, or marine engineering, marine science, or oceanography.
- Current registration as an Engineer in Training (EIT) with the ability to obtain a Professional Engineer (PE) license within 2 years.
- Experience with numerical modeling tools such as XBeach, FUNWAVE, HEC, ADCIRC, Delft3D, SWAN, Mike, or CORMIX.
- Proficiency in computer programming (MATLAB or Python) and Linux environments.
- Experience with coastal engineering design calculations, including marine structures, geotechnical foundations, beach nourishment, and dredge or fill projects.
- Knowledge of coastal flood hazard studies, including wave runup and overland propagation analysis.
- Skills in drafting and geospatial design using GIS and AutoCAD.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite.
- Experience with fieldwork, such as reconnaissance, measurements, or construction inspection.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
