Nurse Extern Cardiac Stepdown Unit

About the role#

The Nurse Extern in the Cardiac Stepdown Unit assists in performing nursing care services under the supervision of licensed healthcare professionals. This transitional role is designed for nursing students interested in pursuing an RN position with SSM Health upon graduation. The program provides hands-on clinical training, including one-on-one mentorship with experienced nurses, to help you apply classroom knowledge in a clinical setting.

What you'll do#

• Perform patient care tasks based on skills deemed competent in nursing school.
• Contribute to patient safety and quality care by monitoring physical conditions, taking vital signs, and answering calls for help.
• Support patient experience by assisting with activities of daily living, such as ambulating, feeding, bathing, and personal hygiene.
• Assist with clinical procedures, including dressing changes, ostomy care, catheter care, and specimen collection.
• Communicate patient condition changes and needs to the licensed nursing staff.
• Maintain and stock unit supplies and equipment.
• Document patient information and participate in unit meetings and department initiatives.

What you'll need#

• Current enrollment in an accredited school of nursing with completion of a fundamentals of nursing class and first clinical rotation.
• Graduation date within 18 months.
• Basic Life Support HealthCare Provider (BLS HCP) certification from the American Heart Association.

Location & details#

• Location: Mount Vernon, Illinois.
• Commitment: Minimum of 24 hours over four weeks with flexible scheduling to accommodate school requirements.
• Compensation: $18.00 per hour.
