About the role#
Simpson Gumpertz & Heger is seeking students for a Summer 2027 internship in our Houston office. You will work alongside our engineers in the office and in the field to apply your classroom knowledge to real-world engineering challenges. This is a full-time, paid position.
What you'll do#
- Assist with construction monitoring, field investigations, condition assessments, and site inspections.
- Support project drafting, structural design, and analysis.
- Analyze materials and assist our petrography staff by developing test protocols, designing testing apparatus, performing tests, and analyzing the resulting data.
- Collaborate with engineers to perform reconnaissance on existing structures and monitor construction in progress.
- Organize field data and assist with research to support repair design and problem solving.
- Perform analysis using hand calculations and software under the guidance of licensed professionals.
- Prepare client deliverables, including construction documents, specifications, and written reports.
- Note that work may include travel and working from heights.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a Civil Engineering or Architecture program.
- An interest in civil or structural engineering, materials science, or architectural engineering.
- A record of maintaining high grades in your studies.
- A strong interest in learning through hands-on work experience.
- Enthusiasm for developing sophisticated engineering work products.
- Strong communication abilities.

- Location: Houston, Texas.
- Term: Summer 2027.
- Work Modality: On-site.
- Compensation: Undergraduate students earn $29.25 to $32.50 per hour, graduate students earn $33.75 to $34.75 per hour, and PhD students earn $36.75 per hour.
- Additional pay: Interns are eligible for a $1,000 sign-on bonus.
- Benefits: Full-time temporary employees are eligible for medical insurance, paid holidays, and sick leave.
