About the role#
Simpson Gumpertz & Heger (SGH) is seeking current students for a Summer 2027 internship in our Oakland office. You will work alongside experts in the office and the field to apply your classroom knowledge to real-world engineering challenges. This is a full-time position.
What you'll do#
- Assist with construction monitoring, field investigations, condition assessments, and construction observations.
- Support project drafting, structural design, analysis, and site inspections.
- Analyze materials and support our petrography staff.
- Develop test protocols, design and build testing apparatus, perform tests, and analyze the resulting data.
- Collaborate with engineers to perform reconnaissance on existing structures, conduct field tests, or monitor construction.
- Organize field data and assist with research to support analysis, problem solving, and repair design.
- Perform analysis using a mix of hand calculations and software.
- Help prepare client deliverables, such as construction documents, specifications, and written reports.
- Note that this work may include travel and working from heights.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a degree program related to civil engineering, structural engineering, materials science, architecture, or architectural engineering.
- A record of high academic achievement.
- A desire to learn through hands-on work in a consulting engineering environment.
- Enthusiasm for the challenges of developing sophisticated engineering work.
- Strong communication skills.
Location & details#
- Location: Oakland, California.
- Term: Summer 2027.
- Work Modality: On-site.
- Compensation: Undergraduate students earn $29.25 - $32.50 per hour, graduate students earn $33.75 - $34.75 per hour, and PhD students earn $36.75 per hour. Interns are eligible for a $1,000 sign-on bonus.
