About the role#
Simpson Gumpertz & Heger (SGH) is seeking students for a Summer 2027 internship in Washington, D.C. You will work alongside experts in the office and the field to apply your classroom knowledge to real-world engineering projects. This is a full-time, paid position.
What you'll do#
- Assist with construction monitoring, field investigations, condition assessments, and construction observations.
- Perform project drafting, structural design, analysis, and site inspections.
- Analyze materials, support petrography staff, develop test protocols, and design or construct testing apparatus.
- Perform tests and analyze the resulting data.
- Collaborate with engineers to perform reconnaissance on existing structures, conduct field tests, or monitor construction in progress.
- Organize field data and assist with research to support analysis, problem solving, and repair design.
- Perform analysis using hand calculations and software under the guidance of licensed professionals.
- Assist with the preparation of client deliverables, including construction documents, specifications, and written reports.
- Note that this work may include travel and working from heights.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a degree program for civil engineering, structural engineering, materials science, architecture, or architectural engineering.
- Maintenance of high grades in your studies.
- A strong interest in gaining hands-on work experience within a consulting engineering environment.
- Enthusiasm for the challenges of developing sophisticated engineering work products.
- Strong communication abilities.

- Location: Washington, District of Columbia, USA.
- Term: Summer 2027.
- Modality: On-site.
- Compensation: Undergraduate students earn $29.25 to $32.50 per hour, graduate students earn $33.75 to $34.75 per hour, and PhD students earn $36.75 per hour. A $1,000 sign-on bonus is provided.
