About the role#
Simpson Gumpertz & Heger (SGH) is seeking students for a full-time Geotechnical Engineering co-op in our Waltham office. This position runs during the Winter 2027 term. You will work alongside experienced engineers in the office and the field to apply your classroom knowledge to real-world projects. This is a paid position.
What you'll do#
- Perform engineering investigations, analyses, and design for structures, including foundations, excavation support, and ground improvement systems.
- Conduct analyses regarding soil settlement, slope stability, soil dynamics, groundwater flow, and seepage.
- Evaluate earthen embankments, dams, reservoirs, tunnels, and pavements.
- Complete forensic evaluations of failed or deteriorated structures.
- Support construction operations for contractors.
- Collaborate with internal groups, including Marine, Flood, Engineering Mechanics, Structural, and Building Technology teams.
- Organize field data and assist with research to support problem-solving and repair design.
- Perform analysis using hand calculations and software under the guidance of licensed professionals.
- Assist in the preparation of client deliverables, such as construction documents, specifications, and reports.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a Bachelor’s degree program in Civil Engineering.
- A strong interest in geotechnical engineering.
- High academic achievement.
- A desire to learn through hands-on work in a consulting environment.
- Enthusiasm for developing professional engineering work products.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
