About the role#
The Nurse Extern role is a PRN position involving 12-hour shifts. This role floats through various departments, including Med Surg, Telemetry, the Emergency Department, and the ICU. Externs perform basic patient care activities under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse to support a patient-focused environment.
What you'll do#
- Perform basic patient care, including monitoring vital signs, recording intake and output, and taking blood glucose measurements.
- Assist patients with activities of daily living such as bathing, grooming, eating, and ambulation.
- Report abnormal findings or changes in a patient's physical, mental, or emotional condition to the nursing staff.
- Support patient admissions, transfers, and discharge procedures.
- Transport patients safely and assist with maintaining clean and orderly patient rooms and common areas.
- Provide nutritional support by passing meal trays, assisting with feeding, and ensuring proper setup.
- Collect, label, and transport specimens, and perform point of care testing according to department policy.
- Provide clerical support to the unit and assist with procedures such as the insertion and removal of foley catheters.
- Monitor skin conditions and report findings for patients at moderate or high risk.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an accredited Nursing Program.
- Successful completion of at least the first semester of nursing school.
- Valid BLS certification.
