About the role#
This summer internship offers undergraduate students the chance to conduct research within the Strategic Deterrence Directorate. You will work on projects that combine theory with computation, focusing on areas like nuclear physics, radiation transport, hydrodynamics, astrophysics, plasma dynamics, and numerical methods. This is a full-time position that requires U.S. citizenship.
What you'll do#
- Develop or use high performance scientific software for research tasks.
- Work under the supervision of mentors on assigned projects.
- Give an oral presentation of your project at the end of the summer.
- Present your work during a poster session.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an accredited university pursuing an undergraduate degree in Physics, Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related field.
- A GPA of 3.5 or above.
- Ability to apply principles of physics, engineering, or computer science to technical problems.
- Experience with coding languages such as Python or C++.
- Effective written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment.

- Term: Summer 2027.
- Modality: Hybrid, with the flexibility to work from home one day per week.
- Compensation: Paid position with a step structure based on completed academic years, ranging from $23.26 to $31.62 per hour.
