About the role#
We are looking for an Optical Engineer Intern to join our team in Fremont, California. This role focuses on the development and improvement of optical processes for the alignment, assembly, integration, calibration, and testing of optical switching systems. You will work alongside experienced engineers and multi-disciplinary teams to gain hands-on experience with real-world optical products.
What you'll do#
- Contribute to the development, validation, and improvement of optical system processes.
- Design and conduct optical Design of Experiments (DOE) to support performance verification and process optimization.
- Support optical system characterization and troubleshooting using laboratory test equipment.
- Analyze experimental data and perform root cause analysis.
- Document experimental methods, analysis, results, and conclusions.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a Master’s degree in optics, photonics, physics, or electrical engineering with an optical orientation.
- Understanding of optics and photonics principles.
- Familiarity with fiber optics, optical components, and optical modules.
- Familiarity with Design of Experiments (DOE) and experimental data analysis.
- Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Proactive and enthusiastic approach to working in a collaborative R&D environment.
- Preferred: Currently pursuing a Ph.D. in optics, physics, or a related technical discipline.
- Preferred: Experience with fiber-optic components, systems, and testing setups.
- Preferred: Experience with optical alignment stations and testing instruments.
- Preferred: Programming and data-analysis skills using Python.
- Preferred: Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Preferred: Bilingual in English and Mandarin.

- Location: Fremont, California.
- Modality: On-site.
- Compensation: $36 - $40 per hour, plus eligibility for variable pay.
- Status: Full-time internship with a rolling term.
