About the role#
This internship at GALLO focuses on the intersection of science and winemaking. You will study the biological interactions between yeast, bacteria, and grapevines to understand how they influence wine sensory attributes. The role involves research into biochemical pathways and the impact of enzymes on wine composition.
What you'll do#
- Study genetic interactions between grapes and yeast.
- Contribute to the biotransformation of aroma and mouthfeel compounds.
- Perform molecular biology techniques including nucleic acid extraction, gene expression analysis, and sequence analysis.
- Execute microbiological tasks such as isolation, identification, directed evolution, and strain maintenance.
- Evaluate yeast strain performance and characterize sensory compounds during fermentation.
- Drive to different production locations as needed.
What you'll need#
- Currently enrolled in or have obtained a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Life Sciences, Agricultural Sciences, or Engineering.
- At least 21 years of age.
- Strong applied technical, analytical, and communication skills.
- Valid driver’s license, safe driving record, and a reliable vehicle.
- Ability to lift and move up to 40 lbs.
- Ability to work at heights of 50 feet for tank inspections.
- Availability for the full duration of the summer and fall 2027 program.
