About the role#
This internship provides an opportunity to contribute to winegrowing research within an industrial setting. You will work with the Winegrowing Chemistry Research department to apply your academic knowledge to real-world projects. The internship lasts for six months, from July through December 2027.
What you'll do#
- Evaluate the chemical characteristics of grapes throughout the maturation process.
- Implement rapid chemical methods to monitor juice and wine attributes.
- Use analytical instrumentation including HPLC, GC-MS, FTIR, GPC, IC, and ITC to perform chemical analyses.
- Model the relationship between product chemistry and sensory attributes.
- Statistically analyze data using computer software.
- Work in a production setting during harvest, which includes operating processing equipment and taking samples from winery tanks.
- Assist in the set-up of laboratory, pilot scale, or production experiments.
- Harvest experimental grapes in the vineyard and inspect wine surfaces on top of tanks at heights up to 50 feet.
What you'll need#
- Currently enrolled in or have obtained a Master's or PhD in the School of Life Sciences, School of Agricultural Sciences, or School of Engineering.
- Strong applied technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Hands-on experience with quantitative analytical chemistry using chromatographic techniques and instrument method development.
- Excellent organizational, oral, and written communication skills.
- Must be 21 years of age or older.
- A valid driver's license, a safe driving record, and reliable transportation.
- Ability to lift and move up to 40 lbs.
- Availability to work overtime, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
