About the role#
The Nurse Extern position is part of the Nursing Transition to Practice Program. It allows nursing students to perform skilled clinical duties under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. You will gain hands-on experience while supporting patient care and recovery.
What you'll do#
- Perform patient assessments and collect basic clinical data.
- Monitor patient status and obtain specimens under RN supervision.
- Identify patient care needs and help implement care plans.
- Provide direct patient care and assist with activities of daily living.
- Monitor patient responses to treatment and report changes to your supervisor.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation.
- Follow organizational policies and infection prevention practices.
- Participate in professional development workshops.
What you'll need#
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Current BLS certification through the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
- Proof of enrollment or completion in the required semesters of an accredited RN nursing program.
- Maintain a nursing school skills checklist on file with the hospital.
- Ability to lift 50-70 pounds and assist in a combined lift of up to 300 pounds.
- Ability to walk 3 miles per shift.
- Sensory ability to distinguish clinical changes in patient skin, fluids, and diagnostic indicators.
