    About the role#

    The International Rescue Committee (IRC) in Silver Spring offers a Youth Intern position for the Fall 2026 semester. This role supports the Refugee School Impact Program and the Refugee Youth Mentoring Program, which assist school-aged students with humanitarian immigration status. Interns help students build confidence, academic skills, and post-secondary plans through after-school programming, workshops, and case management support.

    What you'll do#

    • Build supportive, culturally responsive relationships with refugee and immigrant youth.
    • Deliver engaging, differentiated small-group and one-on-one sessions reflecting the IRC’s Social Emotional Asset Development (SEAD) framework.
    • Provide academic tutoring and homework support across content areas.
    • Mentor youth in college exploration and post-secondary planning.
    • Maintain a safe, inclusive, and welcoming learning environment.
    • Assist with youth case management, including enrollment and the development of individual service plans.
    • Design instructional materials and contribute to a shared team library of resources.
    • Help record attendance, assessments, and participant progress data.

    What you'll need#

    • Currently enrolled in, or holding, a bachelor’s or master’s degree.
    • Experience teaching, tutoring, mentoring, or coaching children and youth is preferred.
    • Ability to create and deliver engaging, differentiated lessons for multilingual and English Language Learner (ELL) youth.
    • Knowledge of ESL/ELD instructional practices and strategies, with familiarity with the WIDA English Language Development Standards Framework preferred.
    • Experience working with English Language Learners is preferred.
    • Majors of interest include Psychology, Sociology, Human Resources, Political Science, English, Communications, and Nursing.

    Location & details#

    • Location: Silver Spring, Maryland, USA.
    • Term: Fall 2026 (September - December).
    • Modality: On-site.
    • Commitment: Minimum of 24 hours per week.
    • Compensation: This position is unpaid, though interns may be eligible for a per diem reimbursement of $15 per day for food and travel expenses.
    • Requirements: Selected applicants must complete a background check.
