The International Rescue Committee (IRC) supports the integration and wellbeing of school-aged students with humanitarian immigration status through the Refugee School Impact Program and Refugee Youth Mentoring Program. Interns provide direct support to youth through after-school programming, academic tutoring, and college and career readiness planning. This role involves youth case management, including enrollment and the development of individual service plans, while working closely with the Youth Team to foster a sense of belonging and security for students.
What you'll do#
- Build supportive, culturally responsive relationships with refugee and immigrant youth.
- Deliver engaging, differentiated small-group and one-on-one sessions using the IRC’s Social Emotional Asset Development (SEAD) framework.
- Provide academic tutoring and homework support across content areas.
- Mentor youth in college exploration, post-secondary planning, and career awareness.
- Design and adapt culturally relevant instructional materials for multilingual learners.
- Administer assessments, record attendance, and track participant progress data.
- Maintain a safe, inclusive, and welcoming learning environment.
- Assist in youth case management, including new client enrollment and service plan development.
What you'll need#
- Currently enrolled in, or holding, a bachelor’s or master’s degree in fields such as Psychology, Sociology, Human Resources, Political Science, English, Communications, Nursing, or related disciplines.
- Experience teaching, tutoring, mentoring, or coaching children and youth preferred.
- Ability to create and deliver engaging, differentiated lessons for multilingual and English Language Learner (ELL) youth.
- Knowledge of ESL/ELD instructional practices and familiarity with the WIDA English Language Development Standards Framework preferred.
- Experience working with English Language Learners is preferred.
Location & details#
- Location: Silver Spring, Maryland.
- Term: Fall 2026 (September – December).
- Modality: On-site.
- Commitment: Minimum of 24 hours per week, with at least 15 hours per week required in-person.
- Compensation: This is an unpaid internship. Interns may be eligible for a per diem reimbursement of $15/day for food and travel costs.
- Requirements: Selected applicants must complete background checks.
