About the role#
The Youth Intern supports the Refugee School Impact Program and Refugee Youth Mentoring Program in Silver Spring. This role focuses on the integration and holistic wellbeing of school-aged students with humanitarian immigration status. Interns assist with after-school programming, college and career discovery workshops, and youth case management, including enrollment and individual service planning.
What you'll do#
- Build supportive, culturally responsive relationships with refugee and immigrant youth.
- Deliver engaging, differentiated small-group and one-on-one sessions reflecting the IRC’s Social Emotional Asset Development (SEAD) framework.
- Provide academic tutoring and homework support across content areas.
- Mentor youth in college exploration and post-secondary planning.
- Maintain a safe, inclusive, and welcoming learning environment.
- Design and adapt instructional materials for multilingual learners.
- Help administer program data, including attendance and assessments.
- Support continuous quality improvement by identifying programmatic gaps.
What you'll need#
- Currently enrolled in, or holding, a bachelor’s or master’s degree.
- Experience teaching, tutoring, mentoring, or coaching children and youth is preferred.
- Ability to create and deliver engaging, differentiated lessons for multilingual and English Language Learner (ELL) youth.
- Knowledge of ESL/ELD instructional practices and strategies, with familiarity with the WIDA English Language Development Standards Framework preferred.
- Experience working with English Language Learners is preferred.
Location & details#
- This internship is located in Silver Spring, Maryland.
- The term is for the Fall 2026 semester.
- This is an on-site, unpaid position requiring a minimum of 15 hours per week, with a preference for up to 24 hours per week.
