About the role#
The Children's Legal Services (CLS) Intern supports attorneys providing legal assistance to unaccompanied youth facing deportation or removal proceedings in immigration court. This role provides an opportunity to gain experience in U.S. immigration law, including applications for Asylum, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS), and humanitarian relief for survivors of human trafficking and serious crimes. This is an unpaid, hybrid internship based in Baltimore, Maryland, for the Fall 2026 term.
What you'll do#
- Assist CLS attorneys with client interviews, follow-up meetings, and ongoing communication.
- Conduct factual and legal research, including country conditions analysis.
- Help clients draft personal declarations and prepare evidence for immigration applications.
- Draft immigration applications, legal cover letters, briefs, and court motions.
- Record client notes in the case management system and assist with organizing and maintaining case files.
- Support staff in monitoring the status of clients' immigration court removal proceedings.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an accredited JD or LLM program.
- A strong desire to help immigrant youth.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, data tracking, and file management.
- Effective communication skills and the ability to work in a multicultural environment.
- Spanish language proficiency is considered a plus.
- Ability to work independently, exercise good judgment, and maintain high attention to detail.
Location & details#
- Location: Baltimore, Maryland (Hybrid).
- Schedule: This role requires a minimum of 15 hours per week, with a preference for up to 37.5 hours. Interns must be in the office on Tuesdays and Thursdays (9 AM to 2 PM) and Fridays (9 AM to 3 PM).
- Term: September 14, 2026, through December 18, 2026.
- Compensation: This is an unpaid internship. Per diem reimbursement of $15 per day is available to offset food and travel costs.
