About the role#
The Children's Legal Services (CLS) Intern supports attorneys providing legal assistance to unaccompanied youth who entered the U.S. without a parent or legal guardian. These youth face deportation or removal in immigration court proceedings. Interns work under the supervision of CLS attorneys to provide legal and factual research for applications including Asylum, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status, and T or U visa applications for survivors of human trafficking and other serious crimes.
What you'll do#
- Assist CLS attorneys with client interviews and follow-up meetings.
- Conduct factual and legal research, including country conditions analysis.
- Help clients draft personal declarations for their immigration applications.
- Draft immigration applications, legal cover letters, briefs, and court motions.
- Monitor the status of client removal proceedings.
- Record client notes in the case management system and organize physical and digital files.
- Maintain confidentiality and adhere to all client privacy policies.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an accredited JD or LLM program.
- A strong desire to help immigrant youth in Maryland.
- Competency in Microsoft Office, data tracking, and file management.
- Effective communication skills and the ability to work in a multicultural environment.
- Spanish language proficiency is helpful but not required.
- Ability to work independently with high attention to detail.
Location & details#
- This internship is based in Baltimore, Maryland, and operates in a hybrid format.
- The term runs from September 14, 2026, through December 18, 2026.
- Interns must be in the office on Tuesday and Thursday from 9 AM to 2 PM, and Friday from 9 AM to 3 PM.
- A minimum of 15 hours per week is required, with a preference for those available for 37.5 hours.
- This position is unpaid. Interns are eligible for a per diem reimbursement of $15 per day to offset food and travel costs.
