About the role#
The Children's Legal Services (CLS) Legal Intern will support attorneys providing services to unaccompanied youth facing deportation or removal proceedings in immigration court. This role focuses on assisting with applications for asylum, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS), and humanitarian relief such as T and U visas for survivors of trafficking and serious crimes.
What you'll do#
- Assist CLS attorneys with client interviews, follow-up meetings, and communications.
- Conduct factual and legal research, including country conditions analysis.
- Help clients draft personal declarations and prepare evidence for immigration applications.
- Draft immigration applications, legal cover letters, briefs, and court motions.
- Monitor the status of client immigration court removal proceedings.
- Record client notes in the case management system and manage physical and digital case files.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an accredited JD or LLM program.
- A strong desire to support immigrant youth.
- Competency in Microsoft Office, data tracking, and file management.
- Effective communication skills and the ability to work in a multicultural environment.
- Spanish language proficiency is considered a plus.
Location & details#
- This internship is based in Baltimore, Maryland, and operates on a hybrid modality.
- The term runs for 14 weeks, from September 14, 2026, through December 18, 2026.
- Interns are required to be in the office on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM and Fridays from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
- This position is unpaid, though university credit may be arranged. A per diem reimbursement of $15 per day is available to offset food and travel costs.
