About the role#
The Student Nurse Extern is an unregulated healthcare worker providing direct personal support to patients on Floor 12. This role focuses on assisting with basic care needs while working under the supervision of Registered Nurses and Registered Practical Nurses. You will gain clinical experience within a medicine and surgical program environment.
What you'll do#
- Provide direct personal support and basic care for up to 10 patients.
- Assist patients with activities of daily living including bathing, toileting, and feeding.
- Document patient activities of daily living, such as intake and output.
- Communicate relevant patient information to the inter-professional healthcare team.
- Report any clinical concerns immediately to your direct supervisor.
- Note that this role does not involve performing regulated acts such as medication administration, vital signs, or clinical assessments.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in years 2-4 of a nursing program.
- Current CPR certification.
- Ability to provide basic assistive care with supervision and mentoring.
- Demonstrated understanding of technology use.
- An understanding of equity, diversity, and inclusion principles.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work well in a team.
- Compliance with mandatory training requirements including privacy, WHMIS, fire safety, and hand hygiene.

- Location: Toronto, Ontario.
- Work Modality: On-site.
- Employment Status: Temporary part-time with rotating shifts (8 or 12 hours) covering days, evenings, nights, and weekends.
- Term: Rolling.
