About the role#
This is an unpaid internship through the Hire Vets Now SkillBridge Program, designed for transitioning active-duty U.S. military personnel. The program provides real-world experience during the final 180 days of active-duty service. Interns train on projects while working alongside mentors and leadership to prepare for potential full-time roles at Newport News Shipbuilding.
What you'll do#
- Implement and monitor industrial safety programs to ensure personnel and facility safety.
- Participate in monitoring and controlling safety standards in accordance with OSHA and state regulations.
- Evaluate new equipment and materials for safety compliance.
- Monitor employee exposure to chemicals and toxic substances.
- Perform surveys and inspections to ensure adherence to safety policies and procedures.
- Test and service safety equipment and systems.
- Report non-compliance or hazardous conditions and suggest remedial actions.
- Maintain storage areas, consumable supply inventories, and personal protection equipment.
- Respond to emergency situations involving hazardous materials, radiation, or fire and smoke incidents.
What you'll need#
- Active-duty military status within the final 180 days of service (candidates may begin applying within the final 12 months of service).
- Education and experience levels are dependent on the specific Program of Instruction.
- Majors in Industrial, Mechanical, or Environmental Engineering are preferred.
