About the role#
The Nurse Extern II position is designed for nursing students graduating in Fall 2026. This role provides clinical experience on post-surgical Ortho, Spine, Joint, and ENT units at Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center. Externs work under the observation of Registered Nurse preceptors to develop clinical skills and prepare for a potential transition into a Registered Nurse role.
What you'll do#
- Complete activities of daily living, vital sign checks, and blood glucose monitoring under RN observation.
- Collaborate with the RN to establish patient care plans based on health, education, and developmental needs.
- Evaluate patient responses to interventions and communicate observations to the RN.
- Administer medication as delegated by the RN, following evaluation of clinical judgment and skill proficiency.
- Manage an increased patient load while incorporating time management principles into your routine.
- Perform patient positioning and transport duties, including lifting and moving patients using proper techniques.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an accredited nursing program with an anticipated graduation date of December 2026.
- Successful completion of a Medical Surgical course that includes pharmacological concepts.
- Ability to assess patient data and interpret information relative to age-specific needs.
- Knowledge of growth and development principles across the life span.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to adapt to changing priorities.
- Ability to meet physical requirements, including lifting up to 50 lbs and performing sliding transfers.

- Location: Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
- Schedule: One 8-hour shift per week on dayshift.
- Status: Part-time, Fall 2026 term.
- Modality: On-site.
