About the role#
This Nurse Extern II position is designed for students graduating in December 2026. You will work within the 34-bed inpatient Med/Surg Oncology unit at Aurora Medical Center West Allis. This role provides an opportunity to gain clinical experience and prepare for a transition into a Registered Nurse position. The role requires one 8-hour shift per week during the day.
What you'll do#
- Complete activities of daily living, including vital sign monitoring and blood glucose checks, under the observation of a Registered Nurse.
- Collaborate with the Registered Nurse to establish patient care plans based on health, developmental needs, and patient preferences.
- Evaluate patient responses to interventions and communicate observations to the nursing team.
- Administer medication as delegated by the Registered Nurse once clinical judgment and skill proficiency are evaluated.
- Manage an increasing number of patients while applying time management principles to your shift routine.
- Assist with patient positioning and transport, which involves lifting, pushing, and pulling.
- Participate in emergency situations under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an accredited nursing program, specifically in your final year.
- Successful completion of a Medical Surgical course that includes pharmacological concepts.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to adapt to changing priorities and interruptions.
- Ability to meet physical requirements, including lifting up to 50 lbs and performing patient transfers.
