About the role#
This Nurse Extern II opportunity is designed for students graduating in December 2026. You will join the Stroke ACE Med/Surg unit at Aurora West Allis Medical Center, gaining experience with a diverse patient population including stroke and acute care of the elderly. This position requires one 8-hour shift per week on days and provides a pathway to transition into a Registered Nurse role upon graduation.
What you'll do#
- Complete activities of daily living, vital sign checks, and blood glucose monitoring under the observation of a Registered Nurse.
- Collaborate with the Registered Nurse to establish patient care plans based on individual needs and preferences.
- Evaluate patient responses to interventions and communicate observations to the nursing team.
- Administer medication as delegated by the Registered Nurse, following an evaluation of your skill proficiency.
- Manage an increased patient load while applying time management principles to your daily routine.
- Assist with patient positioning and transport, utilizing proper lifting and safety techniques.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an accredited nursing program.
- Successful completion of a Medical Surgical course that includes pharmacological concepts.
- Ability to collect and synthesize patient data to identify status and needs.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to adapt to changing priorities and interruptions.
- Capacity to provide age-appropriate care by interpreting data related to growth and development.
- Ability to meet physical requirements, including lifting up to 50 lbs and performing sliding transfers.
