About the role#
Xcel Energy is seeking an intern to join the Load Research or Energy and Demand Forecasting teams within the CFO Organization. These teams create the load profiles, forecasts, and analytical studies that guide the company's resource planning, budgeting, regulatory filings, and generation development decisions. You will contribute to high-impact research and modeling efforts, such as interval meter data analysis, weather-normalized load modeling, and climate impact studies.
What you'll do#
- Gather, review, and summarize data to support load research and forecasting projects.
- Assist with analysis for planning, budgeting, and business decision-making.
- Improve the tools, reports, and processes used for recurring forecasting and research.
- Explore how weather, customer behavior, and new technologies influence energy use.
- Learn forecasting concepts and contribute to projects that build future capabilities.
- Document your work and share findings with team members and internal stakeholders.
What you'll need#
- Current student with Junior status or higher as of fall 2027, enrolled in an accredited college or university.
- Pursuing a degree in Statistics, Data Science, Economics, Econometrics, Applied Mathematics, Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Environmental Studies, Public Policy, or a related quantitative field.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and exposure to statistics or statistical modeling.
- Experience with Python (pandas), R, SQL, or Databricks is preferred.
- Strong attention to detail and comfort working with large datasets.
- Good organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Genuine interest in the energy and utility sector.
Location & details#
- Location: Denver, Colorado.
- Term: Summer 2027 (starting May 31, 2027).
- Work Modality: Hybrid (must be able to commute to the office).
- Schedule: Full-time (up to 40 hours per week) during the summer, with the ability to work part-time (up to 20 hours per week) during the school year.
- Compensation: $19.50 to $24.00 per hour.
- Benefits: Eligible for pension, 401(k) plan, paid time off, and holidays.
