About the role#
As an Embedded Software Engineer Intern, you will work within the Hardware organization where software meets the physical world. You will join a team responsible for the safety-critical software running at the edge of the Waymo driver, which interfaces directly with steering, braking, propulsion, and vehicle sensors. This internship offers the chance to build high-reliability firmware and simulation tooling while working alongside experienced engineers.
What you'll do#
- Develop high-quality C++ software systems for both on-vehicle firmware and off-vehicle simulation.
- Contribute to the bring-up, validation, and debugging of next-generation compute platforms and peripheral drivers.
- Write unit tests using gTest and create Software-in-the-Loop (SIL) simulation fixtures to validate system robustness.
- Analyze field data logs and vehicle telemetry to identify root causes and improve firmware performance.
- Participate in cross-functional engineering workflows, design discussions, and code reviews.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in a BS or MS program in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related technical field.
- A strong programming foundation in C or C++ with a solid understanding of pointers, data structures, and memory management.
- Familiarity with Linux development environments, command-line tools, and version control systems like Git.
- Problem-solving skills and comfort navigating ambiguity when working with prototypes.
- Hands-on experience developing software for microcontrollers, bare-metal environments, or RTOS.
- Practical experience with board bring-up and lab instrumentation such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and multimeters.
- Experience with C++ unit testing frameworks like gTest and test-driven development.
- Proficiency in Python for test automation, telemetry analysis, or build scripting.
- Active involvement in collegiate engineering teams or open-source projects.
