About the role#
Help make the digital content at the University of Virginia accessible to everyone. As an intern, you will perform high-volume remediation of PDF documents for university staff. You will work in small teams of undergraduate students, guided by a Graduate Digital Accessibility Lead Intern and supervised by the Digital Accessibility Coordinator. This role provides an opportunity to learn industry-standard tools and gain skills relevant to government, education, and technology sectors.
What you'll do#
- Manage high-priority and escalated accessibility remediation requests.
- Remediate PDFs and digital documents to meet WCAG 2.2 AA and PDF/UA standards.
- Write or acquire descriptive alternative text for images and figures.
- Review and remediate complex content including tables, charts, and multi-column layouts.
- Update your work log in the tracking system.
- Attend onboarding and training sessions, including weekly team check-ins.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as an undergraduate student at the University of Virginia.
- Strong attention to detail.
- A willingness to learn new software.
- Good written communication skills.
- No prior accessibility experience is required, as training is provided.
Location & details#
- This position is based in Charlottesville, Virginia, with remote work possible after an initial training period.
- The internship runs through the Fall 2026 and Winter 2027 terms, ending May 7, 2027.
- This is a paid position at $18 per hour for up to 10 hours per week.
- Students from all majors are welcome to apply, including those in Computer Science, Communications, and Media Studies.
