About the role#
The Earned Media intern supports the Communications team in securing media coverage that highlights the value and impact of the Medical College of Wisconsin. You will help prepare communication materials for external audiences and assist in shaping the public narrative around our health sciences initiatives.
What you'll do#
- Write news releases, media alerts, and pitches for distribution.
- Gather information through interviews with faculty, staff, and students.
- Follow fact-checking and approval processes for all materials.
- Identify and develop story ideas for local, regional, and national media.
- Coordinate with the PR team to pitch stories and respond to inbound media inquiries.
- Monitor media outlets and maintain updated media contact lists.
- Support earned media reporting and contribute to public relations and social media campaigns.
- Provide suggestions for social media content and manage ad hoc projects.
- Collaborate with the broader Communications team and share progress with External Communications staff.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a bachelor or graduate program in communications, journalism, public relations, or a related field.
- Good academic standing.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to write in AP style.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to plan, prioritize, and adapt to changing tasks.
- Previous experience writing for media or publications is preferred, as is prior media relations experience.
