About the role#
Help make the University of Virginia’s digital content accessible to everyone. As a Digital Accessibility Graduate Lead Intern, you will supervise a small team of undergraduate interns within a document remediation service. You will delegate tasks, review deliverables for accuracy, and manage service processes. Beyond leadership, you will handle advanced document remediation tasks. This position reports to the Digital Accessibility Coordinator and offers an opportunity to learn industry-standard tools for identifying and fixing accessibility barriers.
What you'll do#
- Develop processes and standards for the document remediation program, including accessibility checklists and guidelines.
- Onboard and oversee up to three undergraduate interns, track their milestones, and provide regular feedback.
- Lead weekly team meetings and manage escalations regarding complex content.
- Remediate high-priority or complicated materials, such as charts, tables, and multi-column layouts.
- Ensure documents meet WCAG 2.2 AA and PDF/UA standards by managing reading order, tagging, headings, alt text, and metadata.
- Use tools such as Adobe Acrobat Pro, Equidox, SensusAccess, and PAC.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as a graduate student at the University of Virginia.
- Strong attention to detail and a willingness to learn new software.
- Good written communication skills.
- Interest in accessibility or inclusive design.
- While not required, experience with project management software, supervisory roles, or document formatting is preferred.
Location & details#
- Location: Charlottesville, Virginia.
- Term: Fall 2026 through Winter 2027 (ending May 7, 2027).
- Hours: Up to 10 hours per week.
- Compensation: $22 per hour.
- Work Modality: On-site and remote options available after initial training.
