About the role#
This position supports the Student Loan Servicing Ombudsperson and the Student Loan Program within the Department of Financial Protection and Innovation. You will work directly with California student loan borrowers to provide guidance on repayment plans, federal forgiveness programs, and borrower rights. This role offers exposure to public sector operations and the student loan industry.
What you'll do#
- Screen and assess inquiries from student loan borrowers.
- Communicate with borrowers via phone, email, and in-person to triage concerns and provide guidance.
- Assist in planning, coordinating, and preparing for outreach events and materials.
- Track complaint data and maintain program reports.
- Conduct research on state laws and the federal Higher Education Act.
- Prepare and assemble forms, correspondence, and administrative documents.
- Coordinate with staff on shared department initiatives.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment at an accredited college on the official affiliation list.
- Undergraduate students must be enrolled in at least six-semester units or nine-quarter units.
- Majors in Business Administration, Operations Management, Communications, Political Science, or related fields.
- Ability to provide excellent customer service to student loan borrowers.
- Skill in tracking and analyzing complaints, conducting research, and communicating solutions clearly.
- Capacity for concise, accurate verbal and written communication.
- Ability to work independently and maintain professionalism.
Location & details#
- This is an on-site position located in San Diego, California.
- The role is part-time and temporary.
- Work schedule is flexible between Monday and Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM.
- Employees generally work up to 24 hours per week during the academic year and up to 40 hours during breaks.
- You must reside in California throughout the duration of your employment.
