About the role#
The California Department of Transportation is hiring two student assistants to work in Oakland. You will work under the supervision of a Senior Transportation Engineer or Senior Liaison Engineer. This role focuses on the engineering analysis, development, and administration of emergency projects and contracts within the Division of Maintenance. You will gain experience in a professional office and field environment.
What you'll do#
- Assist Maintenance Liaisons and the Major Damage Advisor with administrative work and special assignments.
- Use Microsoft Office, FileMaker Pro, and MicroStation to create spreadsheets, plans, estimates, databases, and office forms.
- Research as-built plans and Maintenance Agreements.
- Investigate public complaints and inquiries, track Customer Service Requests, and present recommendations to your supervisor.
- Attend field meetings and support project development tasks.
What you'll need#
- You must be a college student enrolled in at least six semester units or nine quarter units for undergraduates, or four semester units or six quarter units for graduate students.
- Your major must be Civil Engineering, Engineering, or a closely related field.
- Maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA and meet unit requirements each term.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Access.
- Knowledge of Computer-Aided Drafting or MicroStation.
- Ability to work in an office or field environment, including working outdoors in various weather conditions and on uneven terrain.
Location & details#
- Location: Oakland, California.
- Work schedule: Flexible hours between 8 AM and 5 PM, Monday through Friday.
- Hours: Up to 24 hours per week during the academic year and up to 40 hours per week during academic breaks.
- Compensation: $18.28 to $28.16 per hour.
- This is an on-site, part-time, temporary position.
