About the role#
The California Department of Conservation is hiring a student assistant to support the Geologic Energy Management Division. You will work with the GIS Services Unit to collect, analyze, and interpret geospatial data for various projects. This is a part-time, temporary position that offers a hybrid work environment.
What you'll do#
- Collect, analyze, and interpret geospatial data to support agency initiatives.
- Research supplemental data sources and evaluate their validity.
- Perform data quality control for infrastructure and sensitive receptors.
- Apply GIS concepts to solve research questions.
- Assist with general mapping requests.
- Document meetings by taking verbose notes and tracking follow-up items.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as a college student at an accredited institution on the university affiliation list.
- Minimum enrollment of six semester units or nine quarter units for undergraduates, or four semester units or six quarter units for graduate students.
- A major in Geography, Geology, Geographic Information Systems, or a related field.
- Experience with GIS through university coursework.
- Proficiency with the ESRI suite, including ArcGIS and ArcGIS Pro.
- Ability to critically analyze spatial concepts and research alternative data sources.
Location & details#
- This role is based in Sacramento, California. All work must be performed within the state of California.
- The position is hybrid and remote-capable, subject to supervisor approval and departmental policy.
- Work hours are flexible between 8 AM and 5 PM, Monday through Friday.
- Students generally work up to 20 hours per week during the academic year and up to 40 hours per week during academic breaks.
- Pay is $16.90 to $19.00 per hour.
