About the role#
The Student Development Director acts as the operational anchor for the alumni headquarters while supporting the professional growth and financial wellness of UC Berkeley students. Reporting to the Senior Director of Facilities Operations, you will manage a team of front desk staff and a cohort of undergraduate interns. This role involves scaling the student intern unit, managing facility hospitality operations, and overseeing the physical workspace to ensure it functions as an effective learning environment.
What you'll do#
- Architect and execute a growth strategy to scale the student intern unit into an integrated workforce.
- Design and facilitate a professional development and career-readiness curriculum for undergraduate interns.
- Oversee the administration, tracking, and compliance of student experiential stipends.
- Partner with campus departments and the UC Berkeley Financial Aid & Scholarships Office to coordinate student placement and stipend eligibility.
- Provide individual coaching, performance reviews, and mentorship to students.
- Manage the recruitment, training, and performance evaluations of the front desk staff team.
- Direct daily facility operations, including visitor experience, security protocols, and lobby logistics.
- Establish and enforce standard operating procedures to maintain a hospitality environment.
- Plan and configure the physical layout of student workspaces to meet safety and resource efficiency standards.
- Formulate and manage the operational budget, vendor contracts, and digital visitor systems.
- Compile programmatic data and author progress reports on student retention and career placement.
What you'll need#
- 4-6 years of experience in student affairs, higher education administration, hospitality management, facilities operations, or front-office leadership.
- Institutional understanding of the modern higher education environment.
- Proven success navigating departmental silos and administrative hierarchies.
- Ability to transform small teams into high-impact workforces.
- Experience maintaining oversight over complex business units and supervising permanent staff.
- Familiarity with spatial planning, workspace optimization, or managing collaborative office layouts.
- Understanding of higher education financial frameworks and budgetary directives.
- Elite interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate across all levels of an organization.
- Demonstrated experience working within the University of California ecosystem and collaborating with UC Financial Aid departments.
