About the role#
This position offers a learning opportunity for a Civil Engineering student to support the Construction Safety and Insurance Program at Caltrans. You will work under the supervision of the Office Chief and senior engineering staff to help improve safety measures for workers and the public. This is a part-time, hybrid role based in Sacramento.
What you'll do#
- Track safety initiatives using spreadsheets and monitoring tools to ensure deadlines are met.
- Assist staff in developing specifications for safety initiatives and work zone measures.
- Coordinate with internal and external partners, including the California Highway Patrol and industry contractors.
- Manage data, conduct research, and perform quality assurance checks on departmental information.
- Prepare reports, technical manuals, and guidance documents.
- Help create PowerPoint presentations and develop safety-related training materials.
- Monitor safety performance dashboards using Tableau.
- Facilitate statewide, division, and office meetings.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as a college student with a declared major in Civil Engineering.
- Minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA.
- Enrollment in at least six-semester units or nine-quarter units for undergraduates; four-semester units or six-quarter units for graduate students.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, and Word.
- Familiarity with Adobe Acrobat Professional.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Analytical abilities and high attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and exercise good judgment.
- Reliability and the ability to work cooperatively with others.
- Capacity to operate standard office equipment.
Location & details#
- Location: Sacramento, California.
- Modality: Hybrid.
- Compensation: $18.28 to $28.16 per hour.
- Schedule: Generally up to 24 hours per week during the academic year and up to 40 hours per week during breaks.
