The Pharmacy Intern (Inpatient) works under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist to assist with the selection, preparation, distribution, and record-keeping of medications for hospital inpatients. This role provides students with the opportunity to gain clinical experience while completing their degree, including participating in clinical consultations, medication history documentation, and medication safety initiatives.
What you'll do#
- Assist in the accurate and timely dispensing of medications, including restocking automated dispensing cabinets and ancillary departments.
- Perform and document comprehensive medication histories to support safe patient care.
- Prepare sterile products through aseptic compounding, labeling, and proper storage.
- Ensure medication safety by detecting and reporting variances, adverse drug reactions, or near misses.
- Conduct patient counseling for specific medications such as anticoagulants and methotrexate.
- Assist with clinical protocols, including IV to PO conversions and renal or hepatic function adjustments.
- Participate in inventory management, including expiration date checks and cycle counts.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in an ACPE-accredited College of Pharmacy.
- Active registration as an Intern with the Kentucky Board of Pharmacy.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
- Foundational understanding of pharmacy calculations.
- Experience with IV admixture.
- Coursework or background in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biology, or Chemistry.
