About the role#
The Pharmacy Intern (Inpatient) works under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist to assist with the selection, preparation, distribution, and record keeping of medications for hospital inpatients. This role offers opportunities to expand clinical knowledge through hospital protocols, medication history documentation, and patient counseling. The position is designed for students currently enrolled in a College of Pharmacy to gain practical experience while completing their degree.
What you'll do#
- Assist in the accurate and timely dispensing of medications, including restocking automated dispensing cabinets and filling medication bins.
- Perform and document medication histories to support safe and effective administration.
- Provide patient counseling on anticoagulation and methotrexate for those being discharged.
- Assist with clinical consultations, including IV to PO medication conversions and renal or hepatic function adjustments.
- Participate in the production of sterile preparations and ensure compliance with regulatory guidelines for medication storage.
- Detect and report medication variances, adverse drug reactions, or near misses to improve safety.
- Maintain inventory accuracy by checking expiration dates and performing cycle counts.
- Support departmental projects, attend educational in-services, and assist in the training of pharmacy technicians.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an ACPE accredited College of Pharmacy.
- Valid registration as an Intern with the Kentucky Board of Pharmacy.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
- Understanding of pharmacy calculations.
- Experience with IV admixture.
- Academic background in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biology, or Chemistry is preferred.
