About the role#
The Pharmacy Intern supports the selection, preparation, distribution, and record-keeping of medications for inpatients under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. This role provides students with clinical experience in a hospital setting, including opportunities to assist with clinical consultations, medication histories, and therapy adjustments.
What you'll do#
- Assist in the accurate and timely dispensing of medications, including filling labels and medication bins, and restocking automated dispensing cabinets.
- Perform and document medication histories and update patient records regarding outpatient pharmacies and medication allergies.
- Conduct rounds to ensure the timely receipt and delivery of medication-related information and products.
- Participate in the production of sterile preparations and the maintenance of code carts and kits.
- Monitor medication safety by detecting and reporting variances, adverse drug reactions, or near misses in the designated reporting system.
- Assist with clinical protocols, such as converting medications from IV to PO and adjusting dosages for renal or hepatic function, under pharmacist supervision.
- Perform inventory tasks, including checking expiration dates and conducting cycle counts.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an ACPE accredited College of Pharmacy.
- Registered Intern status with the Kentucky Board of Pharmacy.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
- Understanding of pharmacy calculations.
- A degree in a related field such as Chemistry, Biology, or Mathematics is preferred.
