About the role#
This Nurse Extern position at SSM Health St. Mary's Hospital in Madison is a transitional role for nursing students. It is designed for students who want to gain clinical experience and have an interest in pursuing a future RN position with the organization. This is a paid, on-site role with a rolling term.
What you'll do#
- Complete patient care tasks under the direction of an RN based on skills you have proven competent in during nursing school.
- Monitor patient behavior and physical condition, watching for signs of progress or deterioration.
- Assist patients with activities of daily living, including bathing, ambulating, feeding, and personal hygiene.
- Perform specific clinical procedures such as dressing changes, enemas, ostomy care, and catheter care.
- Collect biological specimens and measure intake and output of fluids.
- Relay patient information through accurate charting and clear communication with your team.
- Help orient new patients to the unit and prepare them for discharge.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an accredited school of nursing.
- Completion of your first clinical rotation.
- Basic Life Support HealthCare Provider (BLS HCP) certification from the American Heart Association.
- Ability to stand and walk for the duration of your shift.
- Capacity to lift, push, or pull objects weighing up to 50 lbs and assist in moving patients.
