About the role#
The Safety & Security Department at Southwest Airlines works to identify operational risks and address them before they become incidents. As a Safety Programs Intern, you will support various teams, including Hazardous Materials, Safety Investigations, and Industrial Hygiene. This is a full-time, paid role based at our corporate headquarters in Dallas, Texas.
What you'll do#
- Write safety programs that align with regulations and standards.
- Research regulatory requirements and apply them to company policies and procedures.
- Create safety and security communication pieces for companywide distribution.
- Perform gap analyses to compare current programs against new or updated standards.
- Support diverse safety initiatives, such as fire safety, chemical management, and respiratory protection.
- Interface with various departments and working groups on projects.
- Travel as needed to participate in operations throughout the network.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as a full-time student pursuing a degree or minor in Occupational Safety, Safety Sciences, Aviation Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Emergency Response, or a similar field.
- A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Excellent communication skills and high attention to detail.
- Ability to work well within a team and maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to lift or move at least 25 pounds and perform physical tasks like climbing, bending, or kneeling on a periodic basis.
- Must be at least 18 years of age and hold a valid U.S. Social Security Number.
- Experience with aviation operations, technical writing, or government regulations is preferred.

- This internship takes place in Dallas, Texas, at our corporate campus.
- The term runs from May 18, 2027, to August 6, 2027.
- This is a full-time, on-site position requiring 40 hours per week during business hours.
