About the role#
As a Data Engineer Intern, you will join the Enterprise Data Enablement team. This group builds and maintains the real-time data platforms that power critical Southwest Airlines operational systems. You will work on integrating flight operations data, including schedule updates, baggage information, and aircraft fuel data, into a reliable data ecosystem. This work supports data-driven decision making across more than 15 enterprise applications and helps improve operational efficiency.
What you'll do#
- Contribute to real-time projects and collaborate with cross-functional teams.
- Support testing of data pipelines and integrations.
- Isolate errors in data flow or transformation logic and document your findings.
- Contribute to automating manual processes, such as report generation or data syncing.
- Build or update dashboards and reports.
- Document technical processes, data definitions, and system behaviors.
- Monitor data quality, flag inconsistencies, and support cleanup efforts.
- Participate in user acceptance testing for features and reporting tools.
- Conduct quality control activities and provide feedback.
What you'll need#
- Currently enrolled as a full-time student pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Statistics, Economics, Finance, or Business Administration.
- Minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA.
- At least 18 years of age.
- Coursework or experience with Python, SQL, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS.
- Familiarity with AWS cloud services like S3, Lambda, Fargate, Aurora, Athena, and Redshift.
- Experience with data visualization tools such as Power BI or Tableau.
- Knowledge of SQL development, query optimization, and RDBMS.
- Experience with data warehousing, data lake architectures, and ETL/ELT processes.
- Familiarity with XML, XSLT, XPath, JSON, and data transformation.
- Understanding of Agile or SAFe methodologies.
- Strong organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a team-based, customer service-oriented environment.
- High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.
Location & details#
- This is a full-time, paid internship for Summer 2027.
- The role is remote, though travel for trainings or meetings may be required.
