About the role#
As a Product Design Engineering Co-op in the Advanced Development group, you will work at the intersection of industrial design and mechanical engineering. You will take ownership of open-ended design problems and contribute directly to early-stage product development for Shark and Ninja brands. This role focuses on translating ambiguous user needs into feasible, high-impact design solutions. You will participate in the full lifecycle of a product, from concept ideation through rapid prototyping, user testing, and iterative refinement.
What you'll do#
- Generate new product concepts with a user-centered approach, focusing on ergonomics, aesthetics, and functional innovation.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define solutions that meet technical requirements and enhance the user experience.
- Lead and participate in design studies to solve technical and user-experience challenges.
- Build and test low-fidelity prototypes to gather key insights.
- Apply user testing findings to refine and improve your designs.
What you'll need#
- Current student in your third year or beyond of a bachelor's program, currently enrolled in a master’s program, or within one year of graduation.
- Academic focus on Industrial Design, Product Design Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering with coursework in industrial design.
- Experience with CAD software such as SolidWorks, Creo, or Rhino.
- Hands-on experience building physical prototypes using various materials and machine shop equipment.
- Familiarity with basic prototyping tools, including 3D printing and developer kits like Arduino or Raspberry Pi.
- A basic understanding of electronics and components used in small appliances.
- Strong intuition for mechanical engineering and physics principles.
- A portfolio submission is required. Your portfolio should emphasize your design and engineering process, including early ideation, prototyping, and iteration.
Location & details#
- This is a full-time, 40-hour-per-week position based in Needham, Massachusetts.
- The role is 5 days per week on-site.
- The work period runs from July/August 2026 to December 2026.
- This position is paid.
